Ingredients

For the Sauce
  • 12 oz Fresh Cranberries rinsed and picked over
  • 2 large Apples e.g., Honeycrisp, Gala, or Granny Smith; peeled, cored, and diced into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar or adjust to your preferred sweetness
  • 1/2 cup Water or Orange Juice freshly squeezed orange juice for richer flavor
  • 1 tsp Orange Zest from about half a medium orange
  • 1 stick Cinnamon Stick about 3 inches long
  • 1/4 tsp Ground Nutmeg
  • pinch Salt enhances flavors

Equipment

  • Large Saucepan with Lid
  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp Knife
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Wooden Spoon or Spatula
  • Vegetable Peeler (optional)
  • Potato Masher (optional, for smoother sauce)

Method

Prepare Ingredients
  1. Rinse the fresh cranberries thoroughly and pick out any soft or bruised berries. Peel, core, and dice the apples into approximately 1/2-inch uniform pieces. Zest the orange, ensuring you only get the colored part and not the bitter white pith.
Cook the Sauce
  1. In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the rinsed cranberries, diced apples, granulated sugar, water (or orange juice), orange zest, cinnamon stick, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon or spatula to help dissolve the sugar and prevent sticking.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes. Stir periodically, every 5 minutes or so, to ensure even cooking and to prevent the bottom from scorching. Continue to cook until most of the cranberries have burst, and the apple pieces are very tender.
Finish and Serve
  1. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Carefully remove and discard the cinnamon stick.
  2. For a smoother sauce, gently mash some of the fruit with a fork or a potato masher directly in the pot. Leave some chunks for texture if you prefer a more rustic sauce.
  3. Allow the Spiced Apple Cranberry Sauce to cool completely to room temperature before serving. The sauce will thicken significantly as it cools. Taste and adjust sugar if desired after cooling.

Notes

Storage: Transfer the cooled Apple Cranberry Sauce to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 1-2 weeks. You can also freeze it for up to 3 months.
Serving Suggestions: This sauce is delicious served warm or cold alongside roasted turkey, chicken, pork, or as a flavorful spread on toast, scones, or even swirled into yogurt. For an extra bright flavor, stir in a teaspoon of fresh orange juice or a few extra pinches of orange zest just before serving.
