Ingredients

For the Apple Filling
  • 6 medium Apples about 2 lbs / 900g, peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4-inch thick (e.g., Fuji, Gala, or Granny Smith)
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 1 tbsp All-purpose Flour
For the Crumble Topping
  • 1 cup All-purpose Flour
  • 1/2 cup Light Brown Sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup Rolled Oats (not instant)
  • 1/2 cup Cold Unsalted Butter 1 stick / 113g, cut into small cubes
  • 1/4 tsp Salt

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie dish or 8x8 inch baking dish
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Medium Mixing Bowl
  • Vegetable peeler
  • Knife
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

Prepare the Apple Filling
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish or an 8x8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, lemon juice, and all-purpose flour. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated. Pour the apple mixture into your prepared baking dish.
Make the Crumble Topping
  1. In a separate medium mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, light brown sugar, rolled oats, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Using your fingertips, a pastry blender, or a fork, work the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces remaining.
Assemble and Bake
  1. Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  2. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender when pierced with a knife.
  3. Remove from oven and let stand for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the filling to set slightly. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of nutmeg to the apple filling. If your apples are very tart, you might want to add an extra tablespoon or two of granulated sugar to the filling. This crumble is best served warm on the day it's made, but leftovers can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
