Ingredients

Base ingredients
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour Can substitute with gluten-free flour if needed.
  • 1 cup Unsalted butter At room temperature for easy mixing.
  • 1 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup Brown sugar Light or dark will work.
  • 2 large Eggs Helps with leavening.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract For flavor enhancement.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking soda Helps the cookies spread and rise.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt Balances sweetness.
Decoration ingredients
  • As needed Food coloring Choose your favorite colors.
  • 1 batch Royal icing Ideal for decoration.
  • As needed Edible glitter or sprinkles For extra sparkle.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream the butter and sugars. In a large bowl, beat the room temperature butter with granulated and brown sugars until light and fluffy.
  3. Mix in the eggs and vanilla. Add the eggs one at a time and beat well. Then, stir in the vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. Add dry ingredients. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually mix this into the wet ingredients until just combined.
  5. Color the dough. Divide the dough into bowls and add food coloring, mixing until you achieve your desired hues.
  6. Shape the cookies. Scoop tablespoon-sized amounts of dough and roll into balls. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, giving them space to spread.
Baking
  1. Bake! Pop them in the oven and bake for about 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just starting to golden.
  2. Cool and decorate. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for a couple of minutes before transferring them to a wire rack. Once cool, decorate with royal icing and sprinkle with edible glitter.

Notes

Chill the dough if it is too soft to work with. Cookies will firm up as they cool, so don’t wait until they are dark golden brown. Experiment with flavor extracts and textures by adding white chocolate chips or coconut flakes.
