Method
- In a microwave-safe mug (approx. 10-12 oz), combine the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt. Whisk with a small spoon or fork until no lumps remain.
- Add the egg, milk, oil (or melted butter), and vanilla extract to the mug. Whisk vigorously until the batter is smooth and well-combined, making sure to scrape down the sides.
- Stir in the chocolate chips, reserving a few if desired for topping after cooking.
- Microwave the mug cake on high for 60-90 seconds. Cooking time may vary depending on your microwave's wattage. The cake should look mostly set around the edges but may still be slightly moist and fudgy in the center. Avoid overcooking to maintain the fudgy ganache-like texture.
- Carefully remove the mug from the microwave. Let it cool for 1-2 minutes before serving directly from the mug. Optionally, sprinkle with extra chocolate chips or a dusting of cocoa powder.
Notes
For an even richer experience, use heavy cream instead of milk. You can also add a tiny pinch of instant coffee powder (1/8 tsp) to enhance the chocolate flavor. Enjoy warm for the best fudgy texture.
