Ingredients

For the Avocado Tuna Salad
  • 2 cans tuna 5 oz each, packed in water or olive oil, drained
  • 2 medium ripe avocados pitted, peeled, and diced
  • 1/4 cup red onion finely diced
  • 1/4 cup celery finely diced
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro chopped, or parsley for a milder flavor
  • 1 tbsp fresh lime juice from about half a lime
  • 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard optional, for added tang
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper freshly ground, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes optional, for a hint of heat

Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Fork
  • Can Opener
  • Cutting Board
  • Chef's Knife

Method

Prepare Ingredients
  1. Drain the tuna thoroughly. If using tuna packed in water, press out any excess liquid. Place the drained tuna into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Prepare the vegetables: Dice the ripe avocados, red onion, and celery into small, uniform pieces. Chop the fresh cilantro.
Combine Salad
  1. Add the diced avocado, red onion, celery, and chopped cilantro to the bowl with the tuna.
  2. Squeeze in the fresh lime juice. Add the Dijon mustard (if using), garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  3. Using a fork, gently mash the avocado and mix all the ingredients together until well combined and the avocado is creamy, but still has some texture. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the tuna mushy.
Taste and Serve
  1. Taste the avocado tuna salad and adjust seasonings as needed. You might want more salt, pepper, or a bit more lime juice for extra zing.
  2. Serve immediately on whole-grain bread, lettuce cups, cucumber slices, or with your favorite crackers.

Notes

For best flavor and texture, this avocado tuna salad is best enjoyed fresh. If you plan to store it, the lime juice helps prevent the avocado from browning, but it's still recommended to consume within 1-2 days. You can customize this recipe by adding other ingredients like chopped bell peppers, corn, or a touch of hot sauce for extra spice.
