Ingredients

Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Use unsalted for better control of flavor; margarine can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 cup brown sugar Light or dark brown sugar works.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Adjust to taste.
  • 2 large eggs If eggless, substitute with flaxseed meal.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Opt for pure vanilla for the best flavor.
Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour A gluten-free blend can be used if needed.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Ensure it’s fresh for the best rise.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt Enhances flavors; do not skip.
Mix-Ins
  • 2 cups chocolate chips Semi-sweet is classic; other types can be used.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips with a spatula.
Baking
  1. Spoon the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
  2. Bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are golden and a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  3. Allow the bars to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then lift them out using the parchment overhang.
  4. Let them cool completely before cutting into squares.

Notes

For fudgy centers, take them out slightly underbaked. Chilling the dough for 30 minutes before baking can enhance flavors.
