Prepare the Bread
- Using a rolling pin, flatten each slice of bread slightly until it's about 1/4-inch thick. This makes the bread more pliable and easier to seal.
- Using a 3 to 3.5-inch round cookie cutter, cut out two circles from each flattened slice of bread. You should have 16 circles in total.
Assemble the Pies
- In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk to create an egg wash.
- Lay 8 of the bread circles on a clean surface. Spoon about 1-2 teaspoons of Nutella onto the center of each circle, leaving a clear border around the edge.
- Lightly brush the edges of the Nutella-topped bread circles with the egg wash.
- Place the remaining 8 bread circles on top of the Nutella-filled circles, creating a 'sandwich'. Gently press around the edges to seal.
- Use a fork to crimp the edges of each toast pie, pressing down firmly to ensure a good seal and prevent Nutella from leaking during cooking.
- Lightly brush the tops of the sealed toast pies with the remaining egg wash. This will help them turn golden brown.
Air Fry
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3-5 minutes.
- Lightly brush the air fryer basket or rack with melted butter or spray with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Place the toast pies in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded. You may need to cook them in batches.
- Air fry for 6-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the pies are golden brown and crispy. Cooking time may vary depending on your air fryer model.
- Carefully remove the hot toast pies from the air fryer.
Serve
- If desired, dust the warm Nutella Toast Pies with powdered sugar before serving.
- Serve immediately and enjoy the warm, gooey Nutella inside!
Notes
For a square version, you can trim the crusts off the bread slices and fill them, then fold them in half diagonally or keep them square, sealing with a fork. You can also add a small piece of banana or strawberry with the Nutella for a fruity twist. Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day; reheat briefly in the air fryer for best results.
