Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter, softened Can be replaced with margarine or coconut oil for dairy-free.
  • 3/4 cup Granulated Sugar Can use brown sugar for deeper flavor.
  • 3/4 cup Brown Sugar Can be substituted with more granulated sugar.
  • 2 large Eggs Can substitute with flax eggs for vegan option.
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract Almond extract is a great alternative.
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Whole wheat flour can be used for added nutrition.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda Can use baking powder, but texture may differ.
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt Use sea salt for a gourmet touch.
  • 2 cups Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips Can substitute with dark, milk, or white chocolate.
  • 1 cup Chopped Nuts or Sprinkles Optional for garnish.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease or line a 9×13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, stirring well after each. Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  5. Gently fold in the chocolate chips (and nuts or sprinkles if using).
  6. Pour the dough into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  7. Bake for about 25-30 minutes until the edges are golden and a toothpick comes out clean from the center.
  8. Allow the bars to cool for about 10-15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely, then cut into squares or rectangles.

Notes

Ensure eggs and butter are at room temperature for a smoother batter. Avoid overmixing to keep bars tender. Err on the side of slightly under-baking for optimal texture. Optionally, add red, white, and blue sprinkles for a festive touch.
